Daniel was a Union veteran of the 35th Regiment, Company B,Indiana Infantry during the Civil War with his older brother, Israel. Daniel enlisted on 28 September 1864 in Ligonier, Indiana and was dischaged 22 June 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1894, he was admitted to a home for disabled volunteer soldiers due to chronic rheumatism.

Daniel was married to 1) Harriet A. Miller in Albion, Noble, Indiana on 23 October 1864. She was the daughter of Solomon and Elizabeth (Long) Miller; 2) Alice Higgins on 08 April 1879 in Allen County, Indiana, and 3) Ellen (Stockberger) McDaniel 08 March 1885 in Albion, Noble, Indiana. Ellen was the daughter of George and Hannah (Billman) Stockberger. She had been first married to Hiram E. McDaniel in 1878. Noble County records indicate she and Daniel were divorced on 12 May 1894 despite the record of his death which says he was married.
