The husband of Sarah Ann Barkdoll, they married March 8, 1866. The son of Joseph Ripple and Mary Ann Sheeler.

In 1860 he was a laborer living with his parents in Washington Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Waynesboro, Franklin County, August 5, 1862, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg August 8 as a private with Co. E, 126th Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to sergeant (date unknown), and honorably discharged with his company May 20, 1863. He is on the company register by his middle name. He also enlisted in Chambersburg February 7, 1864, mustered into federal service there February 12 as a private with Co. B, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865. This time he is on the company register by his first name and middle initial.

Children: Ida Alice Ripple (b.05/21/67), died young; Lewis Joseph Ripple (b.12/30/69), married Nettie Grace Kepperly; Catherine H. Ripple (b.11/13/71), never married; Mary Elizabeth Ripple (b.07/08/74), married John "Stover" Wingert, George Barkdoll Ripple (b.01/13/76), Anna Laura Ripple (b. 10/27/77), never married; James Harry Ripple (b. 08/21/79), married Nellie V. Myers; Nettie M. Ripple (b. 05/22/82), never married and William Haldeman Ripple (b. 01/10/85, married Louise Sacks.
