Burl was a retired coal miner, having last worked for Freeman No. 4 Mine. He was a former member of the Ferges Free Methodist Chruch, and had presently been a member of Herrin First Baptist Church. He was also a member of the United Mine Workers of America. His death certificate states he had only attended school through the 3rd Grade, no doubt going straight to work in the coal mines.
