Samuel met Sarah V. Spangler (1855-1893) and they married in 1871 in Sullivan County, Indiana. With his father and several brothers, Samuel and wife Sarah left Indiana in 1883 and went to Kansas and then to Colorado. Father David returned to Kansas, but Samuel and Sarah remained in Colorado near Abbott, located south of Fort Morgan.
Ten children were born to Samuel and Sarah, before Sarah died in Abbott, Colorado in 1893. Sarah was buried in the Thurman Cemetery in Washington County, Colorado.

Samuel arrived in Washington State around 1908, after a 15 year residence in Colorado. Other Franklin, Blick, and Goff family members moved to the Bellingham and Ferndale areas of Washington, to take advantage of job opportunities in the timber industry. Charles Franklin, son of Samuel and Sarah, had moved to Washington, and Samuel wanted to be near him.
Samuel lived in Washington for only a short time before he died in 1909. His son Charles William Franklin, remained in Ferndale until 1918 and then moved his family to Idaho.
