we found out that Elmer died, when the postmaster in Otis, Washington County, Colorado, gave a Christmas card to the Otis Independent newspaper office, also located in Otis. The Christmas card was mailed to Mr. and Mrs Elmer Franklin, and dated December 1952. Signed by Dorothy and Paris Bolton and brother Charley, the postmaster assumed that the Boltons were related to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Franklin. John W. Graves, from the Otis, Independent, wrote to Mr. Paris Bolton, of Buhl, Idaho.
He wrote:
Dear Sir; The local postmaster handed me a Christmas card recently which you had mailed to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Franklin, and asking that they write. I am sorry to inform you that they have both passed away, dying just about a week apart, and burial made in the Otis Cemetery. I am enclosing clippings covering the deaths of both, which will, I hope, furnish you with all the information available. Mrs. Franklin's daughter, Mrs. Mabel Chaplin of Denver, seemed unable to find any relatives, as she did not know their wereabouts. She did inform me that Mr. Franklin had a brother, but she stated that she had not heard of him for some forty years. I would like to hear from you. And if there is anything further that I can do in the matter, please let me know. Sincerely, John W. Graves

(Dorothy is Dorothy Franklin, Charley Franklin's mother's sister). I am deeply grateful for whoever wrote the obituaries in 1952, as they contain much family information. ELmer Ray Franklin
Elmer Ray Franklin, son of Samnuel and Sarah Franklin, was born September 29, 1885, on the Old Koser Sheep Ranch, in the southwest part of Washington County, and passed away in a hospital in Denver, Colorado on December 8, 1952, having attained the age of 67 years, 2 months and 9 days.
He grew to manhood in this county, being employed on cattle and sheep ranches in his early youth.
He was married August 7, 1913 of Benkelman, Nebr., to Mrs. Margaret Delephine Baker. For several years they made their home in Kansas City, and moved to Otis in the late twenties, where they have since made their home. Mr. Franklin worked as a handyman around the community for many years, painting and decorating, hanging paper, carpenter, plumbing, and other occupations. He was quite capable at many tasks, and anyone needing something done just "called Elmer".
Both Mr. and Mrs. Franklin have been in very poor health for several years. Mr. Franklin was very faithful in looking after the comfort and well-being of his wife, assuming practically her sole care many times when he was almost unable to get around himself. After Mrs. Franklin was taken to the hospital Mr. Franklin failed rapidly, and on October 11th his step daughter Mrs. Mable Chaplin of Denver, took him to the hospital in Akron, where he remained until October 25th, when she took him to Denver. He underwent two operations, the first on November 5th, the last on November 28th. He passed away on Monday night, December 8th.
Mrs. Franklin survived him only a week, as she passed away on December 15th at the hospital in Pueblo. Other survivors are his step-daughter , Mrs. Mable Chaplin of Denver, and a brother whose whereabouts is not known.
Funeral services were conducted at the Otis Presbyterian church by the pastor, Rev. W. L. Schmalhorst, of which congregation Mr. Franklin was a member, having joined the church in 1937, later being selected as an elder.
A quartet composed of John Howlett, Dale Cumnley, Edwin and Dean Purdy, accompanied by Mrs. John Graves at the piano, sang two selections: "Have Thine Own Way Lord", and "It Is Well With My Soul".
Pallbearers were: W. E. Brantley, N. A. Langley, George Tisdale, Marvin Setterburg, Ernest Matthews, and Clayton Klinzman.
Arrangements were by the Morris Mortuary of Yuma, with interment in the Otis cemetery.
