Archie Hilburn McLeod was born in 1908 to Alexander Calhoun McLeod and his 3rd wife, Mary Catherine "Kate" Terry. He was the 9th child and 5th son of what would total 11 children. He was Kate's first child. Two sisters would follow.

The family lived on a 44 acre farm in the small farming community of Buie, Burnt Swamp Township, Robeson County, North Carolina. Hilburn attended school in Philadelphus.

In 1926, upon attaining age 18, Hilburn enlisted as a Private into the United States Army. During World War II, he saw combat in Europe and Africa. He also served during the Korean Conflict. When he retired after 28 years service, he had attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Hilburn and Susan Alice Buie of Robeson County were married in 1939. They became parents of three daughters and one son. As a military family, they lived in Japan and various military bases in the United States.

When his military career ended, Hilburn and family settled in Red Springs, near Buie. Hilburn and Alice later moved to Charlotte. At one point they divorced but remarried. Hilburn passed away in 1972 at age 64.

Hilburn was also the father of Raymond Eugene Hasty (1927-2000). Raymond's maternal Hasty grandparents became his adoptive parents. He was a NC State Highway Patrolman.
