Roland C. Smith died recently at his farm home in the town of Russell following a week's illness of pneumonia, aged 53 years, six months, 9 days. Roland Smith was born in the town of Gouverneur October 3, 1870 the eldest son of Brayton and Melissa Washburn Smith. In Gouverneur village he spent his boyhood days and grew to young manhood. On Sept 1, 1891, he was united in marriage to Miss Gertrude White of North Russell, who survives him.
There were three children born, Gerald, who died in infancy; Mrs. Walter Smith Woods, who died last July, and Fay Smith who resides near the farm house, in Hermon, and six grandchildren. At the time of Mr. Smith's death he was worthy master of the Pomona grange at Russell. This order was largely represented at his funeral at the North Russell Church.
