Joseph was the son of Nathaniel Powers and Hannah Hartwell. He was the husband of Sarah "Sally" Hart and then of Elizabeth "Susan" Labaree. Children of the second marriage were Salmon, Orma, Ai and Amira. His third wife was Rebecca Sterns, married 14 May 1790, in Monkton, Addison Co., VT. Children from his third marriage were: Horace, Hartwell, Oranzo, Sally , Susan, Laura, Harriet, Rebecca, Joseph and Jane. He served as a soldier in the Rev. War.

In Ferrisburgh, on the 30th ult. Capt. Joseph Powers, aged 68 - a soldier of the Revolution. He was in the battle of Bunker Hill; and as he was one of the first to bear arms in the defense of his country's rights, so he was one of the last to lay them down - yet he signalized himself at the battle of Plattsburgh in 1814.
