Olive Ethel Ockenden, was born in Sussex, England,
on 4th November 1909.
The oldest of two children, & the only daughter of
Charles Henry Ockenden (1885-1971) &
Sarah Pyle (1881-1972)
Her brother was Charles Henry Ockenden (1912-1981)- my Father.

Married to Arthur Robert Smith (1905-1989)
she had three sons,
Robert, Geffrey & Christopher.

When my Father was dying in 1981, he told me that if I felt the need I should go looking for his sister, with whom he had not had contact with for many years. In fact I had never met her!
In May 1999, I finally got to meet my Aunt Olive. She may have sounded & looked like her Mother - my Nana, but she was more like my Father in her outlook, and sence of humour.
We never discussed what had caused the break up, between her & my Father, but we found that we had a common bond, which no one else will ever be able to understand!
Her Mother, my Nana, believed that girl off spring where of little value, after all they could not carry on the family name. So all her life, her Mother refered to Olive as "the Girl"!
It just so happened that she (Nana) also used to refer to me
as "the girl!"
Sadly she passed away on 22 February 2003, like her brother after a fight with cancer.
I'm so pleased that I managed to find & meet her.

DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND WEEP

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!!
