My Grandfather was the eldest son of
Charles Henry & Eliza (nee Kirby) Ockenden.
Born in Ninfield, Sussex, he had 5 siblings:
Ellen (1880)
Alice (1888)
Ada (1883)
Alfred (1890) &
Bessie (abt 1900).
He married my grandmother, Sarah Pyle,
on 28 April 1909, at the Parish Church, St Pancras, London.
They had two children - Olive & Charles Henry (my Father)
My grandparents ran The Lamb at Hooe, Sussex,
before taking over The George at Hurst Green, Kent.
My grandfather, was also responsible, in 1919,
for starting the first bus service between
Bexhill & Little Common in East Sussex.
He loved to drive & did so until he died.
In his later years he survived an appendicitis,
& a broken leg!
He died unexpectently, at home in the kitchen,
whilest getting my Grandmother a cup of tea.
They are buried together,
in Ticehurst Church Cemetry, Ticehurst, Sussex.
They had 4 Grandsons - Robert, Geffrey, Christopher & Michael. Plus one Granddaughter - Christine (k/a Chris) Plus 7 Great Grandchildren.

Your Great Grand daughter (15) asked me today, what did I remember about my Grandfather?
Two things sprung to mind.
He had a little pen knife which went with him where ever he went. He loved to cut up slices of apple with it, which he used to spread butter on. I've never known anyone else to have butter on their apple slices!
Secondly, he would have a go at anything. When I was 11, I had just started to learn to play the recorder. I played for him one day. He was usually easy to please, but on this day he said I could do better. So I gave him my recorder and challenged him to play. He looked at it, carefully positioned his fingers over the holes, and promptly started to play. As a boy, he used to have a "penny whistle" and he had not forgotten how to play.
