Lazarus Hammond was born November 3, 1777 in New Canaan, Fairfield, CT to Hannah (Tubbs) Hammond. and Captain John Hammond

He was united in marriage to Miss Juliana Strong Mathews on March 24, 1795 a the head of Crooked Lake, Steuben Co., N.Y.

Lazarus's father Captain John Hammond and his grandfather Amariah Hammond served together in the French Indian war. John survived but Amariah was killed at the Massacre of Wyoming, on July 3, 1778 in Luzerne, Pennsylvania.

After Juliana's death in 1831, Lazarus married Mary Prentice (1792 to 1863) on May 8, 1832 in Bath, NY. Mary was a much beloved stepmother and grandmother.
