James A. Atwell died at his home at Glen Wild on Friday, Sept. 15. During the past year his friends have noticed a gradual decline in his health, but he continued to discharge his duties upon the farm up to two weeks ago.

He was a son of Sheldon Atwell and Catherine Atwell, formerly Miss Dickinson, of Poughkeepsie. Born about sixty-two years ago, he settled upon a farm adjoining that of his father's, and while at that time it was crude and rough, the years of labor which he has bestowed upon it has transformed it into one of the finest and most productive farms in the town of Fallsburgh. Mr. Atwell was noted, wherever known, for his sterling pure character, his honesty, justice and pure mode of life, and goes to his reward without an enemy in the world, mourned and loved by the whole community.

He was an uncle of H. J. Atwell, of this city.
--Orange County (NY) Times-Press, Tuesday, September 26, 1911

He was the husband of Mary J. Curlette. They had the following children:
Samuel Atwell
William Atwell
Katherine Atwell
Harry Atwell
Florence Atwell

Oldest son Samuel died October 16, 1914, in Kansas, of injuries sustained when kicked by a horse. He had lived in Kansas for about 15 years and was survived by a wife (Rose) and five children (Jennie, Florence, Samuel Jr., Ross, and Anna).
