Sherwood Haywood was the only known child born to Dr. Francis Philomen Haywood and his 1st wife, Ann C. Ferrall. He was the grandson of Sherwood Haywood and Eleanor Howard Hawkins, and gr-grandson of Col. William Henry Haywood, III and Charity Hare. Sherwood died in childhood in Raleigh in 1851, just shy of his 8th birthday.
