Francis Philomen Haywood was born 1809 in Raleigh, Wake County, NC in 1809, the 6th of 9 known children (4 boys/5 girls) born to Sherwood Haywood (Clerk of the North Carolina State Senate) and his wife, Eleanor Howard Hawkins.
He was the paternal grandson of Col. William Henry Haywood (1722-1779) and Charity Hare; and gr-grandson of this family's patriarch, John Haywood (1690-1759) of St. Michaels, Barbados who married Mary "Lucy" Lovett of Beverly, MA and settled in Conecanarie, Edgecombe (now Halifax) County, NC. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of Philomen Hawkins III and Lucy Davis of "Pleasant Hill" plantation in Warren Co, NC.
Francis was educated and received a degree in medicine, but it appears he did not devote himself to doctoring, but focused his efforts on the land, where he was known to be a wealthy planter and slave owner in Wake County.
In 1830, at age 21, he married Ann C. Ferrall (also found as Farrell) by whom he had one known child, Sherwood Haywood (1843-1851). Following the death of his son in 1851, he spent some years alone as a widower. On September 3, 1856, the 47-year old widower married 33-year old, Martha Williams Joyner, daughter of Col. Andrew Joyner, and widow of Col. Archibald Alexander Austin of Halifax County. Martha came to the marriage with her 3 daughters -- Sarah "Sallie" Austin (1846) who later married Capt. Sterling H. Gee (1843-1865) and Matthew Allen Hamilton (1842-1898) of Baltimore; Temperance Williams Austin (1844-1869) who later married Dr. Charles James Gee (1831-1894); and Elizabeth "Bettie" Alexander Austin (1844-1921) who later married Maj. Richard Cogdell Badger (1839-1882).
Francis and Martha would have 2 children together: Minnie Melissa Haywood (1863-1839) who married Leroy G. Bagley; and Francis Philomen Haywood Jr. (1863-1839), who never married.
Dr. Francis P. Haywood was widowed a 2nd time, when Martha died in 1872. By 1900, Dr. Haywood appears on census data as a widower.) He spent his last years living in Raleigh with his widowed step-child, Bettie Austin Badger.
