Martha was the daughter of John and Sarah (Buck) Shelton, the eldest of fourteen children. She moved with her parents to Texas where she was married in 1859 to Harrison B. Rigney, making their first home near Stephenville.

About the year 1898 they moved to what now is Washita County, OK and settled on a farm near Cloud Chief. It was there they reared their children: Sarah, John, Elijah, James, Bluford, Lucinda and William. She passed from this life before 1904 and was buried at Strickland Cemetery, south of Cordell, OK. Her burlial spot has gone unmarked.
