Mrs. Joseph (Gertrude May Washburn) Coverdale
At intervals in the lives of people a happy event is sometimes followed by intense sorrow. The birth of a child brings happiness to the parents but the death of the mother immediately afterward casts a shadow of gloom over all. Such is the case in the death of Mrs. Coverdale, which occurred in this city last Thursday night. On Tuesday morning she gave birth to twins, and soon afterwards went into convulsions. She continued to suffer severely under these visitations and the best of medical aid was summoned to try and stop the intense pain. But after a hard struggle for life on Thursday night she died.
Mrs. Coverdale was the daughter of H. C. Washburn, and formerly lived with her father in this city. On December 21, 1899, she married to Joseph Coverdale by Rev. George Paddock, being sixteen years old at that time. For some time past the happy couple have resided in Charles Mix county, but a short time ago the wife returned to this city for a visit, little realizing that she would never again return to her pleasant home. The loss to the young husband is great and is also a hard blow to the father, brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were held on Sunday at the Baptist Church and the remains were interred in Bluff View Cemetery. Vermillion Plain Talk, Vermillion, South Dakota, August 15, 1901
