Vern will be remembered for his keen sense of humor and for the many humorous stories which he enjoyed telling. He always laughed louder and longer at his stories than anyone else, and in doing so brought a great deal of happiness into the lives of many.
Vern was preceded in death by his wife, Leona who died March 8, 1979. Vern was very lonely during this very difficult time in his life. His good friend Ray Schulthies got him to attend single adults meetings and parties. He also began to attend church again during this time. He met and married Bessie Flowers Geer Walker on January 5, 1980 at the Owyhee Ward cultural hall with his son and grandchildren in attendance.
