Pleasant Henderson Hanes owned a Winston-Salem, North Carolina tobacco company in partnership with his brother John Wesley Hanes.
They sold the business to the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and Pleasant Hanes established the P.H. Hanes Knitting Company to manufacture underwear. In later years his offspring would merge the company with his late brother's Hanes Hosiery Mills and over time became a major international operation and one of the world's largest producers of hosiery and underwear.
