John Wesley Hanes owned a Winston-Salem, NC tobacco company in partnership with his brother Pleasant Henderson Hanes. They sold the business to the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and in 1901 John Hanes founded Shamrock Mills to manufacture stockings. The company later changed its name to Hanes Hosiery Mills which over the years became a major international operation and one of the world's largest producers of hosiery and underwear. The John Wesley Hanes and Anna Hodgin Hanes Foundation was established for charitable purposes.
