James was the son of Thomas and Susannah Dishman Galloway
and grandson of Marshall and Hannah Galloway. James married Margaret V. Harpole on 25 Nov 1841 at Warren Co.,Kentucky. They had six sons, Oliver P., John Marshall, George H., Charles T., James Ewing, and Joseph William Galloway. James was a Kentucy farmer, whose grandfather, Marshall Galloway, had enlisted in the Continental Army and fought in the American Revolution. James' father, Thomas (born in Virginia and grew up in Tenessee), reportedly fought under Gen. Andrew Jackson at the battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812, and after the war he was granted bounty land in Kentucky where he married, settled and reared 13 children, one being James Monroe Galloway.
