James' father, Thomas (born in Virginia and grew up in Tenessee), reportedly fought under Gen. Andrew Jackson at the battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812, and after the war he was granted bounty land in Kentucky where he married, settled and reared 13 children, one being James Monroe Galloway.
