Son of Eugene (NMI) & Harriett (Deverson) Stevens, brother of Walter D. Stevens.

In 1863, when Irving was about twelve years old, he was listed as a clerk in a confectionery store, where he was employed for two years, then he worked in a grocery for W. R. Ransdell. In 1868, he went to work for his brother, Walter, in the lumber yard. Walter had purchased the lumber yard from Otis Hardy.
Two years later, Irving went to work for the U. S. Express Company, where he was employed for two and a half years. He then was employed by the Solar Stove Works and upon the death of the founder of the establishment, William N. Moore, Irving was chosen Secretary of the company. A position which he held for many years. After which he engaged in the manufacturing of agricultural implements.
For 30 years, he was a prominent business man in Joliet. There is a possibility that Irving may have been in Alaska at sometime.
