"John Pollock was a weaver by trade, but lived on a farm, and he and his sons farmed and weaved for a living. He was a Methodist Class Leader of the old type. He was a Republican and a wonderful admirer of Abraham Lincoln. He has sat on many a jury where Lincoln was lawyer in the case. He with Lincoln was a praiseworthy man, and has heard Lincoln make many a speech. John Pollock lived for forty years five miles east of Old Salem, Lincoln's old home."
"He had traded a house and lot in Unionville, Ohio for forty acres of land two and one half miles west of Athens, Illinois in Menard County. An old log cabin stood on the place and the sheep had occupied it, so the sheep were driven out and his family moved in. He took rails and struck them in the cracks of the logs and on them put the bedding, and the family slept while the parents watched off the snakes"
