James Leonard Russ Sr, 84, formerly of Louisville, went to meet his Heavenly Father on Thursday, June 26, 2008 at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown, KY.

He was born on September 23, 1923 in Lyons Station, KY the son of the late Hugh "Splinter" and Cary Catherine "Carrie" LaFollette Russ. He was a charter member of the Bluegrass Saddle Club. He was in the car business most of his life, owning Russ Motors, Leonard Russ Chevrolet and general manager of Montgomery Chevrolet.

His passion and love was for his horses. He had many champions in barrel racing and flag racing. In December 2005 he was inducted into the Equine Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, OK.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Hadley Russ; one son, James Leonard Russ Jr; brother, Joseph Edward Russ; four sisters, Alta Seng, Margaret Hardesty, Golda Russel and Edna Salsman.

He is survived by his former wife, Anna Ruth Miller Russ, of Louisville; two sons, Larry Wayne Russ (Penny), of Texas and Gary Lynn Russ, of Shepherdsville, KY; four daughters, Judy Ann Heavrin (Larry), of New Albany, IN, Doris Jean Keith (Joe), of Louisville, Carolyne Lee Heffner (Paul), of Louisville, Barbara Ruth Russ (Mitchell), of Shepherdsville; two stepsons, J.D. Hadley, of Columbus, IN and Reese Hadley, of Columbus; one brother, Albert Lewis Russ, of Louisville; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral: 2 p.m. Sunday at Rolling Fork Christian Church, Lyons Station, KY, with Rev. Dale Cruz officiating. Burial: St. Catherine Catholic Church Cemetery, New Haven, KY. Visitation: 2-8 p.m. Saturday, William R. Rust Funeral Home, 167 N. Main St., New Haven and after 1 p.m. Sunday at the church. In lieu of flowers, please send in forms of sympathy to the Bluegrass Saddle Club. William R. Rust Funeral Home in New Haven is in charge of arrangements.
