The will of John Campbell is as follows:

In the name of God, Amen. I, John Campbell, of Ozan Township in the County of Hempstead and State of Arkansas being in feeble health but of sound mind and disposing mind and memory, calling to mind the frailty and uncertainty of the tenure of human life even with the most robust and healthy, and being desirous of settling my worldly affairs and directing how the Estate with which it has pleased God to bless me shall be disposed of after my decease while I have strength and capacity as to do, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament by me heretofore hereby revoking and making null and void all other last Wills and Testaments by me heretofore made. And first I Commend my immortal Soul to him who gave it, And my body to the earth to be buried decently and without ostentation by my Executors herein after mentioned.

And as to my Worldly Estate, and all the property Real, Personal or mixed of which I shall die seized and possessed or to which I shall be entitled at the time of my decease, I desire, bequeath, and dispose thereof in the manner following, to wit;

Imprimis: My Will is that all my just debts and funeral expenses shall by my Executors hereinafter named be paid out of my Estate as soon after my Decease as shall by them be found convenient.

Item: I give and bequeath to my Son John George Campbell the tract of land whereon I now reside; containing between five and six hundred acres more or less, and including my dwelling or manor house, together with all such fixtures, advantages, and appurtenances as belong to or in any wise appertaining properly appertanous to said tract, to have and to hold the same to him the said John George his heirs and assign to his and their use forever. I also give to my said son John George the personal property following, to wit: two horses to be selected or chosen from among my stock of horses by himself, four cows and calves, or cows with calf, to be selected or chosen in like manner, four Ewes and lambs, my entire stock of Hogs on and appertaining to the plantation herein before devised, although not literally on the same, my entire set of Blacksmiths tools, all my ploughs, hoes, axes, gears and gearing , whether on or off the plantation with such other implements of farming and shall have thereon, one new horse waggon, all my kitchen furniture, geese & poultry, and two feather beds with full and appropriate bedding, to be for the sole use of himself his heirs, Executors, Administrators and assigns.

Item, I give devise and bequeath to my Grandson John Campbell Holman son of John Burton and Ann Holman of the aforesaid County of Hempstead and State of Arkansas a tract of land which I own situate in said County on the West side and near the Carouse Bayou adjoining a tract of land heretofore and probably now owned by Robert Tyree, Containing one hundred and sixty acres more or less, together with all its appurtenances, advantages and profits, to have and to hold the said tract owned by me as before stated containing one hundred and sixty acres of land more or less, as also before stated to him the said John Campbell Holman his heirs and assigns to his and their use and their use and behoof forever.

Item. I give devise and bequeath to my Grand daughter Isabella Holman child of aforesaid John Burton and Ann Holman one hundred Dollars in money to be paid to her by my Executors hereinafter named after my decease when she shall have arrived at sixteen years of age to be for the sole use of herself her heirs, Executors, Administrators and Assigns

Item. I give devise and bequeath to my Daughter Anne Holman aforesaid one feather Bed with all necessary and appropriate bedding.

Item. I give devise and bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth Gibson wife of Elijah Gibson of the aforesaid County of Hempstead one feather Bed with all recusory and appropriate Bedding. Also One hundred Dollars in money to be paid to her by my Executors hereinafter named within twelve months after my decease to be for the sole use of herself, her heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns.

Item. I give devise and bequeath to my son in law James Moss, the husband of my Daughter Margaret and residing in the said County of Hempstead, my four horse waggon, the same being light and somewhat worn, to be delivered to be delivered to him by my Executors herein after mentioned within three months after my decease to be for the sole use of himself his heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns.

Item. I give, devise and bequeath to my Grand son John Campbell Mofs son of the aforesaid James and Margaret Mofs, one hundred dollars in money to be paid to him by my Executors hereinafter named when he arrives at twenty one years of age and to be for the sole use of himself his heirs Executors Administrators and assigns. Item. I give devise and bequeath to my Daughter Susan Eskridge formerly Susan Campbell one feather Bed with all the necessary and appropriate Bedding to be for her sole use of the said Susan her heirs Executors and Assigns.

Item. I give devise and bequeath to my Grand daughter Isabella Eskridge the daughter of the aforenamed Susan One Hundred dollars in money to be paid to her after my decease when she shall have attained twenty one years of age by my Executors herein after appointed to be for the sole use of the said Isabella her heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns.

Item. I give devise and bequeath to my son in law Hamilton D. H. Scoby believed to be of Bradley County Arkansas One bed and bedding necessary and appropriate thereto. Also One hundred dollars in money to be paid to him by my Executors hereinafter named and the bed and bedding delivered twelve months after my decease, to be for the sole use of himself, his heirs, Executors, Administrators and Assigns.

Item. I give devise and bequeath to my Son John George Campbell in Addition to the real and personal Property herein before given devised and bequeathed to him, two negroes, to wit: Virgil and Marina, Slaves for life to have and to hold the same for the sole use of himself his heirs, Executors, administrators and assigns. Nevertheless upon the term and with the understanding following, that is to say the said Slaves shall remain on the Plantation or tract of Land where they now are hereinbefore given devised and bequeathed to my said Son John George Campbell as the Slaves and Property of my said son for the term of five years at the end of which term or within one year thereafter if they shall pay or cause to be paid in Cash to my Executors hereinafter mentioned the sum of six hundred dollars they and each one of them shall be in virtue of this my last Will and Testament, emancipated and set free are by my said Son in due and Legal form. If this clause of my said Will be insufficient for that Purpose and when so emancipated and set free be assigned by my said Son his heirs or assigns and allowed to occupy such small portion of the tract of land given devised and bequeathed to my said Son John George at some convenient point or corner thereof as may be necessary with industry on their part for their support during their respective lives.

Item. All the Balance and residue of my Estate inclusive of the sum of six hundred dollars which may arise under the Provision of the last clause herein above written of this Will and Testament, real, personal or mixed, of which I Shall die seized and possessed or to which I shall be entitled at the time of my decease, I give devise and bequeath to be equally divided to and among my children and in case it cannot be equally divided amongst them, I wish it to be sold on a credit of twelve months after public notice for at least ten days the payment of the same at such sale well secured and the proceeds thereof when received divided in like manner amongst my said children, all to be superintended done and carried out by Executors hereinafter mentioned.

Lastly I do nominate and appoint my sons in Law John Burton Holman and Hamilton D. H. Scoby hereinbefore mentioned to be the Executors of this my last Will and Testament.

In testimony whereof I the said John Campbell have to this my last Will and Testament contained on two sheets of Paper, and to each sheet thereof subscribed my name and affixed my seal this seventeenth day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and forty seven.

Be it Remembered that on the 1st day of June A.D. 1847 before me Simon T Sanders Clerk of the Circuit Court and Ex-Officio Clerk of the Court of Probate within and for the county of Hempstead in the State of Arkansas personally came and appeared James Gibson, and William Yates, two of the subscribing witnesses to the Last Will and Testament of John Campbell late of the County of Hempstead in the State of Arkansas is deceased and they being by me first duly sworn and subscribed the following Affidavit, to Wit: That he the said James Gibson on the seventeenth day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand eight hundred and forty seven saw John Campbell the Testator subscribe his name at the end of the Amended and forgoing paper writing and that he then acknowledged the same to be his last Will and Testament. That he the said William Yates on the said seventeenth day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and forty seven heard the said John Campbell acknowledge that he had subscribed his name at the end of the amended and foregoing paper writing and that he the said Campbell then acknowledged the same to be his last will and Testament that they the said James Gibson and William Yates together with Edward Crofs subscribed the same as attesting Witnesses in the presence of the said John Campbell and at his request and in the presence of each other, that the said John Campbell at the time of signing and acknowledging his name to said paper writing and declaring the same to be his last will and Testament was of sound and disposing mind and memory.
