Birth name Margaret Courtney. According to census records, she immigrated to the U.S. in 1857. She joined the Sisters of Loretto in 1859.

Sr. Stephana's sister Catherine Courtney (b. c. 1838) also joined the Sisters of Loretto, taking the name Sr. Erminildis. Catherine left Loretto in 1863, joined a breakaway group of Sisters of Loretto in Chicago 1864-1871, and may have entered a Sisters of St. Joseph community after that.

The decision was made in the Fall of 2021 to move the Sisters from the Loretto Heights Cemetery to Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery so that they can rest united with the other Sisters of Loretto.
