NEWPORT NEWS – Leona Casner Eastwood, Ph.D., director of Health Occupations Program for Riverside Regional Medical Center, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, in Riverside Regional Medical Center. Dr. Eastwood served as consultant to the Virginia State Department of Education and other nationally known health programs. She won recognition from the U.S. Department of Education in 1982 for the Dental Aide Assistant Program which she designed. The program was cited by the department as one of the nation's 10 best vocational offerings. Many of her articles were published in professional journals. Dr. Eastwood was a past chairman of the board of the American Heart Association, Virginia Chapter, and past president of the Virginia Chapter of the American Society for Health Education and Training. She was also a member of the National League for Nursing and Eastern Star Chapter No. 127, Smithfield. A native of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., she received her Ph.D. in education at Walden University, Naples, Fla. Survivors include her husband, Lemuel P. Eastwood; two sons, George E. Wyatt Jr. of Rescue and James G. Wyatt of Norcross, Ga.; a sister, Jeanne C. Groves of Smithfield; a brother, Bernard Casner of Allentown, Pa.; and four grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Colonial Funeral Home Chapel, Smithfield, by the Rev. Marcellus Lee Harris Jr. Burial will be in St. Luke's Memorial Park, Smithfield. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home followed by an Eastern Star service at 8 p.m. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, Isle of Wight Chapter Memorial Chairman, Route 1, Box 468, Walters 23481.
