Robert CUSHMAN was the son of Robert and Elizabeth (Betsey) Crooker (MORTON) CUSHMAN and a Mayflower Descendant.

Robert first arrived in Coloma, CA on 29 February 1852 and then settled in Georgetown, CA shortly after. He returned to MA to marry Alfreda Ann Smith (COOK) CUSHMAN on 12 July 1855 in Lakeville, Plymouth Co., MA. Both arrived back in CA by way of the Isthmus in November 1855.

Robert and Alfreda had 13 children with three dying of scarlet fever.

Additional note regarding the death date of Robert CUSHMAN per Sandy (BECKER) HERVÉ.
From the Georgetown Gazette Newspaper there are 2 possible death dates, August 27, 1888 or August 28, 1888. Both state that Robert CUSHMAN was aged 61 years 12 days at the time of death. Per his Kingston, MA Birth record this would make his death date August 31, 1888. So, that does not clear up the question of which date is correct. Unfortunately, there is no death certificate, headstone or burial records in existence for Georgetown Cemetery for that time period. Could it be that there was confusion on his birth date of August 19th? If you reverse the nine to a 6 to make the birth date August 16th, then August 28, 1888 would be 61 years and 12 days. Also, the more formal obituary used the August 28th date. With this in mind I will use August 28, 1888 as his death date with notations that the death date could be August 27, 1888.

IN MEMORIAM
DIED--In Georgetown, August 28th, 1888, Robert Cushman, aged 61 years and
12 days.
In whom we mourn the loss of one of Georgetown's oldest and best
citizens. He fought many a hard fight in life's battle, and his chief
motto was--"Do unto others as you would they should do to you," and eat
the bread of honest toil.
But his toils are o'ver, his work is done,
And he is fully blest;
He fought the fight, the victory won,
And enters into rest.
