Julius Anderson was born in Rimbo, Stockholm County, Uppland Province, Sweden, the son of Karl Erik Andersson and Karolina Söderlund. He immigrated to the United States on June 15, 1894, living in Utah soon after their arrival.

Following the outbreak of World War I, Julius was drafted into the Army during World War I, serving in the 31st Infantry Regiment (or "Polar Bears") as a mechanic. He likely served in Siberia, protecting allied military supplies held there prior to the Russian Revolution.

On the 29 March 1920, Julius married Lila Francis Martin (1898-1976), the daughter of Lue Martin (1874-1961) and Pearl Vaughn (1879-1917), in Twin Falls, Twin Falls Co., Idaho. Julius and Lila had thirteen children together, which included Julius, Robert, Oliver, Viva (possibly Vivian), Eugene, Lee, Velma, Dale, Delbert, and Jack.
