Betsey Hall was born in Morristown, New Jersey on 5 Oct 1791, the daughter of Damaris Moore and Jacob Hall. Family tradition said that she was "a New York Hollander."

After Betsey married Alpheus Collins they purchased a farm in Walcott, Rose Twp, Wayne County, NY where they lived until moving to Michigan in 1830, first to Mallett's Creek in Pittsfield, and finally to Lyndon Twp, both in Washtenaw County.

Rev. Leander Pilcher wrote that Betsey Collins had a gentle nature. "She was a sweet singer, often starting hymns for the meetings of worship in private houses and barns, and in the woods. The singing led by her made deep impressions which were long remembered."

Betsey was the mother of 11 children, ten boys and one girl. Four of the sons became Methodist ministers.

There is some discrepancy in the family records about the death dates of Betsey Hall and Alpheus Collins. Three accounts agree that she died on May 23rd (contrary to the headstone inscription of May 19th), but one account has her husband dying in 1861 and that Betsey lived "about a twelve month." This would mean she died in 1862 instead of 1861 as inscribed on her tombstone.

[I changed Betsey's birth year from 1790 to 1791 to reflect the records of the Morristown Church, as researched by cousin Jim Collins.]
