E.O. Allen, 101, a longtime resident and well-known business owner, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999 at Colonial Vista Convalescent Center.

He was born Nov. 12, 1897 to Edgar and Mary (Tobin) Allen in Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada and in 1906 moved with his family to Wallace, ID and in 1913 to Newport. On June 7, 1919 he married Agnes M. Kirklin in Newport and before her death in September of 1991, they celebrated their 72nd anniversary.

Mr. Allen worked at various location in Washington State with Standard Oil Company for California from 1920 to 1929 and then began working for the Ferguson & Ross Insurance Agency. In September of 1934, he opened his own agency, the Allen Insurance Agency, and continued working there until retiring in December of 1962.

He was a charter member of the American Legion Post #45 in Newport, later transferring to Post 10 in Wenatchee. He served a number of years as scout master of troop #10, sponsored by the American Legion Post #10. He was also a member of the Scout Council and in January of 1965, he was awarded Scouting Silver Beaver Award.

Mr. Allen was president of the Assn. of Insurance Agents of the State of Washington in 1949-50 and also served for a number of years on the State Executive committee of the State Assn. of Insurance agents.

He served as president of the Wenatchee Chamber of Commerce in 1953-54 and was a charter member of the Applarians. Mr. Allen was a member of the Wenatchee Rotary Club and earned their highest national honor, the Paul Harris Award.

Following retirement in 1962, they divided their time between Wenatchee and their home in Lake Wenatchee until moving to Colonial Vista in 1985.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. J.O. Nicholson of Wenatchee and Mrs. Peter Schneller of Seattle; two granddaughters, Susan Orem and Ann Brown, both of Wenatchee; two great-grandsons, Chris Koch and Allen Koch and his wife, Michelle, all of Bellingham; one great-granddaughter, Rachel Nicholson of Wenatchee. He was preceded in death by his wife, a son and a sister.

A private family graveside service will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 3, 1999 at 2 p.m. in the Wenatchee City Cemetery with Father Ricardo Villarreal officiating. Memorials may be made in his name to the charity of choice.
