GOOKIN

Roger Marion Gookin was born in Russell, February 17, 1929, the youngest son of Arthur and Mary Thompson Gookin. He passed away on June 25, 1996 at the V.A. Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 67.

He attended Russell schools and graduated in 1947. He attended Simpson College for one year before joining the service.

On October 8, 1948, Roger was inducted into the United States Air Force. He received an honorable discharge on August 7, 1952. He took great pride in service to his country.

Roger was united in marriage to Wanda Dawn Fothergill on August 2, 1953, in Des Moines. To this union three sons were born.

Roger farmed in his early years and later worked as a sales agent. During the 70's and early 80's, Roger and Wanda owned and operated Jolly Roger's in Melrose. They moved to Longmont, Colo. in 1982, where Roger was a real estate broker.

When they returned to Chariton, Roger continued to sell real estate and opened Gookin Realty on the west side of the square in 1987. He retired in 1992. During his retirement, Roger was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing golf. He also loved the times spent with his children and grandchildren.

He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Russell, the Chariton Masonic Lodge, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, Fraternal Order of Eagles in Chariton, the American Legion, VFW, and the Longmont Moose Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ancil Earl Gookin.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Wanda of Chariton, three sons, Mike and wife Mary of Wilton; Joe and wife Kellie of Russell; and Doug and wife Karen, also of Wilton; five grandchildren, Heather and Chad Gookin; and Amber, Emily and April Gookin, all of Wilton; a host of other relatives and many good friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, June 29, 1996, at the Fielding Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Prosser officiating. Burial was in the Russell Cemetery. Honorary bearers were Carl Cross, Vic Phippen, Eddie Gookin, Hugh Moore, Leland Gookin, Don Cottingham and Kenny Gookin.

Serving as bearers were Clayton Blue, Lowell Sims, Don Klobnock, John Murphy, Dr. Robert Grappendorf, Dwaine Clanin, Dean Thompson and Gary Schuster. Military rites were conducted at the cemetery by American Legion Charley Clark Post No. 308 of Russell.
