MARY AMELIA GOOKIN

Mary Amelia Thompson, daughter of Francis Marion and Sarah Margaret Thompson, was born on February 13, 1896, and died at Memorial Hospital in Chariton, July 26, 1967, at the age of 71 years, 4 months and 13 days.

She was united in marriage to Arthur Gookin May 2, 1920, and to this union were born two sons, Ancil Earl and Roger Marion.

She lived in the Russell area all of her life, residing on the same farm where she was born. She attended the Chariton schools, graduating with the class of 1917. She taught in the Lucas County schools.

At an early age, Mary was converted and united with the Russell Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 30 years. She was an active member of Women's Society of Christian Service, the Russell Garden Club, and a charter member of the W.H.O. Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Olin, and her oldest son, Ancil.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur; one son, Roger, of Des Moines; 4 grandsons, Jon, Michael, Joseph and Douglas, of Des Moines; a sister, Mrs. Lloyd Cottingham of Derby; 2 brothers, Howard Thompson of Des Moines and Lloyd Thompson of Chariton.

Her friends are numbered by her acquaintances and she will be sadly missed by both her friends and relatives.

Services were conducted by the Rev. Bob D. Davis at 2 p.m., Friday, July 28, 1967, at the Russell Methodist Church. The Beardsley-Fielding Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Interment was in the Russell Cemetery.
