William Earl died at 9:45 o'clock last night at his home on Ford Street of hemorrhage of the brain following stroke of paralysis. He was surrounded by his wife and six children, all of whom arrived in time to say farewell. Mr. Earl possessed a vigorous constitution until about two years ago when he sustained a stroke. He never fully recovered his health, though he was able to attend to his duties as overseer of the poor until a short time ago. The funeral will be held from the residence Friday at 2pm, Rev. S. T. Dibble officiating.
Mr. Earl was born in Augusta, Ont, Jan 4, 1831, while his parents were living there temporarily, their home being in the town of Hammond. He spent his boyhood in that town and came to Ogdensburg when 20 years of age, since which he had continuously resided here. He served as overseer of the poor for the town of Oswegatchie for twenty-five years and for fourteen years before that was a city police officer. He was married in 1863 to Miss Elizabeth Daniels who, with the following children, survives him: John W., New York; Mrs. Charles Meed, Morristown; Grant, Ramsey, NJ; Dr. Frank D., Miss Nettie and Herbert, of this city; also a half-brother, Joel, of Prescott; two brothers, Henry of Georgia and John of Ogdensburg, and a sister, Mrs. Royal Brand of Malone.
Mr. Earl led an honorable, useful life, true to the duties imposed upon him. He served the people faithfully as overseer of the poor. He was an active member of the M.E. church, in which he was a class leader for many years.
Mr. Earl was passionately fond of hunting and fishing. He was a true lover of the old St. Lawrence and his annual catches were among the recorded events of every fishing season on the river.
