Asa Faulkner was born of German descent to Dr. Archibald Faulkner and Rebecca Burkhalter Faulkner on July 16, 1802, in the Edgefield District of South Carolina. Six years later, the FauIkners moved to Tennessee and settled on a farm beside Hickory Creek, nine miles south of McMinnville. Shortly after settling there, Dr. Faulkner constructed and began operating the first woolen mill in the county and a cotton gin.
