It is rumored that Carl had a bad temper. On a trip into Brenham from Wiedeville, he was overtaken and passed by another wagon. This apparently angered Carl. He decided to get his gun and shoot or threaten the other highway man. Carl confronted the offending party but he was "out gunned", shot and killed August 20, 1893.
