Emily J. Durham, 94, of Alcoa, TN, formerly of Oak Ridge, TN, passed away Monday, May 26, at Piedmont Hospital in Fayetteville, GA. She had been living with her daughter Angela since December of last year due to her declining health. Born in Northern Ireland, daughter of John and Annie Cairns, she worked in the American War Office during World War II. She married an American soldier and came to the states after the war, becoming an American Citizen in 1953. She was a nurse at Oak Ridge Hospital for 20 years and was a Red Cross volunteer for five years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bunyan Durham, step-son, Bob Durham and brother, William Cairns. She was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church in Oak Ridge and while living in Alcoa for five years attended Fellowship Baptist Church. Survivors include daughters and son-in-laws, Angela and Walt Porterfield of Fayetteville, GA, Emily and Rick Townsend of Alcoa; daughter-in-law, Margaret Durham of Knoxville. Nine grandchildren, Becky Marable, Diane Boyer, Kevin Townsend, Kim Nash, Charlie Knoch, Rob Buchanan, Brain Townsend, Tina Prudeaux and Stacy Porterfield and 16 great grandchildren. She also leaves behind a sister Marion Maxwell, who lives in Northern Ireland, sister-in-law, Annie Laurie Durham, of Norris, brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Millie Durham of Nashville. Also Special friend Cathy Hines. Funeral service 8:00 pm on Thursday May 29, 2008 at Miller Funeral Home Magnolia Chapel, officiating will be her grandson, Rev. Rob Buchanan. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Thursday. Graveside service will be held 11:00 am Friday at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Rev. Ray Buchanan officiating.
