James was classified as 4A by the Draft Board for World War I because of his age. He was living in Jacksonville in 1918 and was a member of the Young Men's Christian Associations of the United States (YMCA). That year, he was appointed secretary of the National War Work Council of the YMCA, to serve the troops of the American Expeditionary Force in France and Great Britain.
