Mrs. Margaret Agles was found dead Monday morning in a cistern at her home, 206 Garden street, this city. She apparently ended her life during the night in a spell of despondency over the tragic death of her husband, the late Charles Agles who was accidentally killed while handling a defective shotgun on November 8, 1935. Her sister, Mrs. Dennis Hentz, also met a tragic death, suffering fatal injuries in a fall down a flight of stairs. The death of Mrs. Hentz occurred on May 31, 1933.
Since the death of Mr. Agles, the widow had given up church and other activities. She rarely visited with her children or other relatives.
Sunday night her despondency did not appear any worse than usual. About 10 o'clock she and a son Charles Agles, with whom she lived, ate lunch together. Half an hour later they went to their respective rooms. Mrs. Agles did not remove her clothing, but there was evidence Monday that she lay across the foot of her bed for a time.
Mrs. Agles could not be found Monday morning when her son arose. Fearing she had ended her life, he looked into the cistern but did not see the body. Recalling that she had mentioned plans of visiting the home of another son, Joseph Agles, the son with whom she lived found his brother, Assistant Chief of Police Edward Agles. The two went to the third brother's home but were told that Mrs. Agles had not been there. They then returned to the Garden street address.
Meanwhile the body had come to the top of the water. Members of the fire department were called to assist in removal of the body. The opening in the top of the cistern, about 18 inches in diameter, was so small that it was necessary to break the top. It is believed that Mrs. Agles' body passed through the opening with considerable difficulty.
Mrs. Alges, formerly Miss Margaret Murphy, a native of Tipperary, Cork County, Ireland, observed her 66th birthday anniversary on August 30, last. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Murphy. Mrs. Agles was about 21 years of age when she came to Edwardsville to visit her sister, Mrs. Hentz. Impressed with the new surroundings, she arranged to remain here.
On November 25, 1892, she and Mr. Agles were married by the late Rev. C.A. O'Reilly, the ceremony being the first performed by the young priest who had just taken charge of St. Mary's Catholic parish. Three sons are the only immediate survivors. There are five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mrs. Agles was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, The Century Club and Altar Society. In these organizations she formerly took a great interest.
The body will be at Straube Funeral Home. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rev. C.A. Meagher will have charge. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
