Charles Wallace Armstrong, 87, of Athens, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at his residence.

A lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late John and Mattie Howell Armstrong and was preceded in death by one brother, Rob Armstrong. He was a member of Wesleyanna United Methodist Church and a member of Englewood Lions Club. He was a dairy farmer, active in many farming organizations and had been a member of the McMinn County Farm Bureau for more than 50 years. He also received the first "Farmer of the Year" award presented by the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Lou Choate Armstrong of Athens; two daughters and sons-in-law, Billie and David Brown and Jane and Jim Rogers, all of Knoxville; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Kay Armstrong of Athens; two granddaughters, Suzy Armstrong of Knoxville and Camille Armstrong of Boulder, Colo.; three grandsons and spouses, C. Scott and Pam Rogers, Chris and Shelley Rogers, all of Knoxville, and Charles J. Armstrong of Englewood; one great-granddaughter, Rachel Rogers; five sisters, Hannah Moses of Etowah, Alice Strickland and Katherine Robinson, both of Athens, Johnnie Janeway of Concord and Sadie Kinnamon of Knoxville; and one brother, Jack Armstrong of Etowah.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Denton officiating. Burial will follow in McMinn Memory Gardens with nephews serving as pallbearers.

The body will be state at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday.
