Alice Irene Strickland, 89, of Athens, died Saturday evening, Oct. 2, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late John and Martha "Mattie" Howell Armstrong. She was a member of Wesleyanna United Methodist Church and the Etowah Eastern Star, Chapter 96. She was preceded in death by her identical twin sister, Hannah Moses; three brothers, Rob, Charles and Jack Armstrong; and one son-in-law, Joe R. White.

Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Wayne F. Strickland of Athens; three daughters and one son-in-law, Mary Wayne White of Columbia, S.C., Betty Jo and Ralph Bookout of Visalia, Calif., and Alice Faye Choat of Athens; six grandchildren and two spouses, Gregory Choat, Michael White, Kevin and Shelly Choat, Kelly and Stephen Brown, Travis Choat and Trevor Choat; two great-granddaughters, Mikayla and Madeline Choat; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Johnnie and J.L. Janeway of Concord, Katherine and Jack Robinson of Athens, and Sadie Kinnamon of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wesleyanna United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles McKinney and the Rev. John Roberson officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Athens with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

The body will lie in state for one hour prior to services at the church. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Bordwine Funeral Home.
