George and Mary Ann's son Jacob was killed while walking home down a trolley car track late one night. He was apparently drunk and had fallen down onto the tracks. A book about eastern Kansas trolley lines stated that the trolley line that ran in the area where Jacob was killed had been robbed a number of times by gangs. They used people lying on the tracks to get the trolleys to stop in remote areas so they could be robbed. The trolley line ordered its drivers to keep rolling and hope that the people on the tracks would get out of the way before they were hit. Jacob didn't move, was hit and killed. The effect that this had on the family was to force Susan to choose one of her twin boys to go to the mines to work while the other went to school to get an education.
