m: Eleta L Neely 26 Sep 1953 in Kootenai Co, ID

Earl W. Hill, 67, a longtime resident of East Wenatchee, passed away Friday, June 14, 2002 in Central Washington Hospital.

He was born Sept. 16, 1934, the youngest child of Walter and Stella (McDonald) Hill, at Melbourne, AR. He attended Ruddle Hill School in Batesville, AR.

In 1952, Mr. Hill moved to Wenatchee. He married Eleta Neeley in October of 1954 at Coeur d'Alene, ID and they made their home in East Wenatchee. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany.

Following his honorable discharge, he worked as a cement mason and worked on the Wells, Rocky Reach and Wanapum Dams on the Columbia River. He was a member of the Concrete Finishers Union until an injury in an explosion forced him to retire.

Prior to his retirement and during the time he was working as a cement mason, Earl purchased a former wheat farm in East Wenatchee and planted an orchard. He pumped water from the canal on Eastmont Avenue into a vintage water truck and hand irrigated the young trees for three years until irrigation water became available.

Mr. Hill raised calves and honey bees and a large garden. He was close to the land and respected and followed the old ways. He canned the best dill pickles and pickled asparagus, and was a great cook. He said to work hard when you are young so you don't have to work hard when you are old, and to save every penny you can.

Earl loved to go fishing on his boat in Neah Bay. He also loved to hunt deer and elk. He loved his family and friends and especially enjoyed having spirited discussions with them. Underneath his gruff exterior was a gentle soul.

"We love you and will miss you."

Survivors include his son, Donnie W. Hill of Wenatchee; his daughter, Pamela L. and her husband Mitchell E. Hill of Wenatchee; his grandchildren, J. Colin and his wife Heather Hill; David P. and his wife Amy Hill; Moria E. Hill; two brothers, Frank Hill of Mtn. Home, AR; Carl Hill of East Wenatchee; one sister, Mildred Elliott of Madras, OR; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at Telford's Chapel of the Valley with Pastor Don Hussong officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. Viewing will be held today from 1 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
