Mary Annette Horn

Mary A. Horn, 86, of North Las Vegas, Nevada, and formerly of Dayton, Iowa, passed away on March 31, 2024, at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas.


A celebration of life service for Mary will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Carson-Stapp Funeral Home in Dayton, Iowa, with visitation beginning at 12:00 P.M. Pastor Kay. Christie will officiate. Burial will follow at Christ the King Catholic Cemetery in Dayton.


Mary Annette Schlief, daughter of Merrill and Corinne (Bowen) Schlief, was born on May 30, 1937, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Mary graduated from Dayton High School with the class of 1955.


On April 21, 1956, Mary was united in marriage to Melvin Horn at Christ The King Catholic Church in Dayton, Iowa. The couple made their home in Des Moines and later in Dayton.


Mary was a very proud member of the Moose Lodge, holding various high degrees. She was a loving and supporting wife of 64 years, and was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother.


In addition to her parents, Mary was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Melvin Horn; son, Phillip Horn; grandson, Adam Oliver; and brother, Jim Schlief.


Surviving are her children, Cindy (Rick) Oliver of Des Moines, Cathy (Kevin) Adams of North Las Vegas, Brian (Tammy) Horn of Des Moines, Greg Horn of Des Moines, Mary Stoddard of Corona, CA; daughter-in-law, Christine Horn of Des Moines; 18 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren. Survivors also include her siblings, Jack (Roma) Schlief of Dayton, Clarence (Kathy) Schlief of Lehigh, Joan Johnson of Dayton, Carroll (Kathy) Schlief of Dayton, and many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
