M.A. "Smiley" Burnette, 84, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008.
Celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Pleasant Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Walls, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery with military rites by DAV Chapter 26. Arrangments are by Blackburn-Shaw Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road.

Smiley was born Aug. 18, 1923, in Floyd County, Va., where he was raised. After moving to Amarillo in 1943, he married the love of his life, Ermastein Reneau, on March 27, 1944, in Amarillo. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and after the war, received an honorable discharge.

A jack-of-all-trades, he owned and operated Smiley's Automobile Upholstery for several years. He also taught at Texas State Technical Institute, and assisted with paint and body work in the school's shop. Smiley was a member of Second Baptist Church, Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Pleasant Valley Lions Club and the DAV. Some of his hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening and traveling. He also had a passion for restoring antique cars and working on his farm in Colorado. His great sense of humor attributed to his enjoyment for socializing and being around people. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Velvalleen Flannagan of Salem, Va.

Survivors left to cherish his memories include his wife; a son, Adrian G. Burnette of Amarillo; a brother, Clayton Burnette and wife Ruby of Danville, Va.; a sister, Helen Worrell of Laurel Fork, Va.; a niece, Glenda Sharp and husband Kenneth of Hillsville, Va.; and three brothers-in-law, Russell Reneau of Amarillo, James Reneau of Jay, Okla., and Robert Reneau of Haslet.

The family suggests memorials be to the Alzheimer's unit, Thomas E. Creek Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care System, 6010 W. Amarillo Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106; or Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, 555 E. Hastings Ave., Amarillo, TX 79108-5240.
