Samuel McClure was the fourth of the six known children of John Ashcraft McClure and Susannah Haycraft, an early pioneer family of Grayson County, Kentucky. He was born there in 1820. Early Grayson census records show the family name as McLure. Samuel married Frances J. Cravens, the daughter of John and Mary (Haskiel) Cravens, about 1841 or 1842. After the death of Frances' father, John Cravens, her mother married an unknown Raglin and an unknown Lile by whom she had other children. Lile apparently adopted her Cravens and Raglin children.

Samuel McClure died on July 7, 1888 and was buried in the McClure Cemetery south of Leitchfield, Grayson County, Kentucky. His wife Frances, who died October 14, 1899, and many of his children and grandchildren and their spouses are also buried in this cemetery off Highway # 259.
