Dr.John Bitonti Jr.of Roscoe,chairman of the Speech Pathology and Audiology Department at California State College,died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning Saturday,Dec.9,1978,at his residence. He was 44. He was found in the garage of his home after apparently falling asleep in his car with the motor running. He was born in Belle Vernon on Jan.3,1934,and had lived in Roscoe for 20 years. Dr.Bitonti was graduated from Belle Vernon High School in 1951 and received his Bachelor of Science degree from California State College in 1960. He later became a professor of speech pathology at the college,earnng his master's and doctorate degrees from West Virginia University. Dr.Bitonti served in the U.S.Navy during the Korean Conflict,and he was a member of the American Legion Post 22,Charleroi. He was a member of Roscoe Borough Council at the time of his death and also was a member of the Roscoe Presbyterian church. Dr.Bitonti was a member of the Uniontown Lodge of Perfection and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite,Valley of Pittsburgh. The professor was a member of many professional organizations,including the Pennsylvania Speech and Hearing Association,of which he was past president. He was also a member of the Association of Pennsylvania State Colleges and University Faculties,the Pennsylvania State Education Association,the National Education Association and the Division for Children With Learning Disabilities,and the American Speech and Hearing Association. Dr.Bitonti is survived by his widow,Janet Gainer Bitonti,a son,John W.Bitonti,at home,his mother,Mrs.Josephine Bitonti of Belle Vernon,and a sister,Mrs.Joseph (Arlene) Vargo of Fayette City R.D.1. He was preceded in death by his father,John Bitonti,in 1964,and a brother,Pete A.Bitonti,on May 13,1976. Friends will be received in the Shelby D.Ferguson Funeral Home,700 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon,from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home,with the Rev.John H.Milne,pastor of the Roscoe Presbyterian Church,officiating. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Shelby D.Ferguson is the funeral director in charge of arrangements.
