Col. John Terry Alexander, U.S. Army, Ret., 54, of Austin, died Wednesday, December 8, after an illness of about 6 weeks.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Alexander, 1503 El Paso Street.

Col. Alexander served in the Navy during World War II, and was stationed on the USS President Jackson in the Pacific Theatre. Afterward he attended Tarleton State University, Stephenville and was graduated from the University of Texas, Austin, in 1950 as a Distinguished Military Graduate. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and on October 23, 1950, he was sworn into the Army.

He retired in 1973, and shortly after that he and his wife, Betty, moved to Austin.

Col. Alexander served four tours of duty in Germany and also in Korea and Vietnam. He was stationed at Sandia Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Fort Benning, Georgia, and Fort Gordon, Georgia.

He received his Master's degree from New York University while serving in the Army.

Among the decorations he received were the Legion of Merit (twice) and the Meritorious Service Medal with two clusters.

He was the first Military Police Officer to have back to back Battalions. He was Battalion Commander in Frankfurt, Germany, then was sent to Vietnam to serve as Battalion Commander. This is done routinely now.

Col. Alexander was born near Wellington February 8, 1927 and graduated from Wellington High School with the Class of 1943.

In 1947, he was married to Betty Jo Jones of Childress.

Graveside services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio.

Survivors are his wife of Austin, a daughter, Kathryn Ann Mitchell of Red Oak; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl G. Alexander; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Orr of Wellington and Mrs. Edna Earle Smith of Sweeney.
