Civil War Veteran Dies in Taylorville
Feb. 20-James Akin, a resident of Christian county for the past 40 years and a veteran of the Civil war, died at this home, one-half mile west of Roby, Wednesday, at the age of 72 years, He was a native of Indiana, and came from that state to Illinois 42 years ago, settling in Mt. Auburn township, where he had since resided. He served in the Civil war as a private in the 115th Indiana regiment. His widow and seven children, all of whom live at home excepting one, are surviving. The funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning at the Buckhart church and interment will be made in the Buckhart cemetery.

James Akin was born Jan. 12, 1839, in Jay county, Ind., and departed this life at his home in Roby, Ill., Feb 19, 1911, at the age of 72 years, 1 month and 7 days.
At the age of 17 he came with his parents and settled at Delavan, Tazewell County, Ill. At the age of 23, he obeyed his country's call and enlisted in Co. H., 115th regiment Illinois infantry. He served 13 months, part of which time he was confined in the Nashville hospital.
In 1867 he was married to Jane Kunce. To this union was born one child, Adam Theodore, who now resides in Gladwin, Iowa. In 1868 Mrs. Akin departed this life.
He was united in marriage to Mrs. Emily Hutchens Aug. 11, 1870. To this union were born nine children, two of which preceded their father to the better shore. Those who survive are Martha A. Buckles, of Breckenridge, Ill.; Rebecca J. Dodson, of Decatur, Ill.; J. F., a merchant of Roby, Ill.; C. W., of Lanesville, Ill.; E. O., of Cornland, Ill.; Oral, of Lagrange, Ind.; Percie, who resides at home.
He resided in this neighborhood for 33 years and was respected and loved by all who knew him. He joined the Christian church 33 years ago, under the preaching of Rev. Oliver Hammet, at the old Sudduth school house, to which faith he clung until death. He was also a member of the G.A.R.
For 23 years he suffered untold agony from that awful cancer, which he patiently bore until death relieved him. He leaves to mourn, an aged wife, six sons, two daughters and a host of friends.
