Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeff Conway, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40.
Charles was born May 19, 1918, in Seguin to Howard Earle Short Sr. and Emma Joie Harris Short. He graduated from Seguin High School in 1936, and married Helen Frances Greenwood on Valentine's Day 1947. He began his military service in the Calvary Brigade of the Texas National Guard in 1939.
He was a bombardier-navigator in the U.S. Air Force, flying in the B-26 Martin Marauder during World War II bombings behind the beaches at Normandy on D-Day. He obtained his law degree from the University of Texas in June 1946, and was recalled to active duty as a bombardier instructor during the Korean War in March 1951.
He was awarded the Air Medal with 12 Oak Leaf Clusters, the European Theater of Operations Ribbon with five Battle Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross and his 397th Bomb Group, Ninth Air Force, received the Distinguished Unit Citation.
He was appointed Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Texas in 1953. He moved to Amarillo in 1960 when he joined the legal staff of the Shamrock Oil and Gas Company.
He was a charter member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 52, since Dec. 16, 1972, earning the highest award possible, the Auxiliary Operation Award. He served as Flotilla Commander for three years, and was the Public Education Officer for 25 years, during which time he taught the Safe Boating Class at Amarillo College.
He was a life member of Seguin Elks Lodge #1229. He had membership in the Reserve Officers Association, the 397th Bomb Group Association, the B-26 Marauder Historical Society and the Panhandle Boat and Ski Club.
He belonged to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Charlie loved people and never met a stranger. He carried jokes in his shirt pocket to share with those he knew and those he didn't know yet. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and friend, and was a special person to everyone who knew him.
A special "thank you" is extended to those who cared for Charlie at The Heart Hospital of Northwest Texas and Odyssey Healthcare.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances.
Survivors include a daughter, Sally Moss and husband Jack; a grandson, Lindsey Moss; granddaughter, Christi Moss; great-granddog, Snickers; and many dear friends.
