INVERNESS, Fla. -- Mr. Carl Horton, 77, of 1422 S. Hawkeye
Point, formerly of Raven, Va., died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, in a
Florida hospital.

He was born in Raven, and was a son of the late Christopher and
Grace Chambers Horton.

He was a former owner of the Bay Port Inn in Weeki Wachee,
Fla., a member of Highway 44 Church of God of Inverness and a
life member of VFW Post 4337. Mr. Horton was also a former
commander of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640 in Richlands.

Mr. Horton, 1st sergeant E8, World War II, Co. L 169 Infantry
43rd Division, Korean E. Co. 5th RTC and Vietnam War, retired
Sept. 1, 1965, with 22 years of service receiving two Purple
Hearts, Combat Infantry Badge with one star, nine ribbons and
two Presidential Citations.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four
brothers, Mr. Brittian Horton, Mr. Emory Horton, Mr. Otis Horton
and Rev. Grat Horton.

Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Daisy M. Wilson Horton; four
daughters, Mrs. Betty Jane Barkstrom of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Mrs.
Ruby Whited of Swords Creek, Va., Ms. Deborah Bowden of
Clearwater, Fla., and Ms. Cathy Condra of Inverness;


two sons, Mr. Eric Alenius of San Jose, Calif., and Mr. Tim DeRossett of
Beloit, Wis.;

two brothers, Mr. Fred Horton of Raven, Va., and Mr.
Woodson Horton of Knoxville, Tenn.;

13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Carl Horton will be conducted Tuesday at
11 a.m. at Richlands Tabernacle in Richlands, Va., with Rev.

James Horton officiating. Interment will follow in the Tom
Chambers Family Cemetery at Shortt Gap, Va. Relatives and
friends will serve as pallbearers. Members of the Casey-Shortt
VFW Post No. 9640 of Richlands and the Disabled American
Veterans Tazewell County Chapter 31 will conduct military
graveside rites. Friends may call at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home
in Richlands from 6-9 p.m. Monday.Father: Christopher Horton
